      <image:title>Blog - Sessile Conversations: music centered installation around the senses of plants - Ethylene Signalling/Smell: Fruit on plants ripens at the same time, and this is done through chemical signalling – a kind of pheromone equivalent in the plant world, the smell of ripening fruit causes the other fruit to ripen so that the plant can best take advantage of the birds and animals that come to feast and spread their seed. The installation for this track was a grid of painted cardboard circles to represent fruit, and the activity is for one coloured circle to change and cause all the others to change also. The music features an echo principle, phrases are repeated but inverted, the low parts translated into the high parts on the repeat in a slow, graceful dialogue.</image:title>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6094e81f9967a9234d64713b/1629550062472-2BDQVQGO2TG60Q59RXUN/Thigmo+%282%29.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - Sessile Conversations: music centered installation around the senses of plants - Thigmomorphogenesis/Touch: Plants respond to objects in their path by growing around them, and respond to repeated touch of wind or other elements – or the touch of humans – by avoiding and growing away from that touch. This activity featured rolls of paper with objects and obstacles scattered over them, and participants were invited to become the growing plant tracing their path around the objects using crayons. The music for this track has the two guitar parts paralleling each other but bouncing off of each other to push one part slightly out of place, only to return to being synchronized to being bounced out of place again in an eternal dance between action and reaction. It is quite strong as elemental forces that act on plants can distort and shape them to an enormous degree.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Sessile Conversations: music centered installation around the senses of plants - Phototropism/Sight: Sight in plants allows them to perceive different qualities of light – through the sensing of how light is different at dawn through the day to dusk - plants can both know when to activate and absorb light and also follow the path of the sun. For this track an animation showing a plant following the path of the sun was combined with an installation combining rocks, strings and cardboard. The Music follows the principle of two interacting forces coming together to cause movement – the response of the plant comes from the stem for the movement, even though the sensory apparatus that is aware of the light changes is in the tip. The stem and the tip are represented by high and low tones moving towards each other and interacting as both are needed in Phototropism.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - Sessile Conversations: music centered installation around the senses of plants - Vernalization/Memory: A plant not only has to sense the temperature to know what seasonal cycle it is in, it also has to remember and chart the temperature of the preceding days, and combine that information with the length of the light to know when it is time to shed leaves for Autumn. That process of remembering is known as Vernalization. For this installation there was an animation as well as leaves and objects that could be scattered with the animation as the leaves fell in an ever-changing combination. The music for this track is a slow build with a few simple elements, and repeated or varied versions of that element were added over time to build to a climax to reflect the cumulative data that leads to the shedding of leaves. All of the melodic patterns in the music fall downwards, combined with a relentless, minimalistic drive.</image:title>

      <image:caption>Classical Guitar Lessons: A Teaching Philosophy Originally from Australia, I began my studies in guitar there, attending the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, before moving to the US to pursue guitar performance and instruction. I hold two masters degrees, a research masters in Musicology (MPhil) from the University of Sydney and a performance masters from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (MMus). I have returned to Australia and am now located in Melbourne, where I attained additional qualifications in Alexander Technique. I am accepting guitar students in Carlton North and Elsternwick. Meet Meredith.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Guitar Lessons</image:title>
      <image:caption>Music should be enjoyed! My first priority is to foster a life long love of music in my students; not just as someone who enjoys playing their instrument and plays their repertoire with understanding and musicality, but as someone who will love music for the rest of their lives. To help achieve that, a basic teaching philosophy is that most technical issues can be resolved through appropriate repertoire; there is also a focus on relaxed technique and efficient body use to reduce the tension issues so common for the classical guitarist. I bring over twenty years of experience in having taken students to the highest levels of solo and ensemble performances.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Guitar Lessons</image:title>
      <image:caption>Lesson Structure and Content Lessons can have a strict focus on Classical or Spanish Guitar, or lessons can also cover a broad range of materials: note reading, chords and chord songs in popular music, songwriting, music theory. All students learn as a part of their instruction note reading, right hand technique, and musicianship. Meredith encourages using a systematic curriculum such as the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) for those who wish to achieve levels and certificates in their study. All students are encouraged to perform regularly and opportunities will be provided, including chamber music. Long distance lessons are available, and students are encouraged to contact me about a suitable instrument if they are thinking of purchasing one.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Alexander Technique - Meredith is an Alexander Technique teacher, and a member of the Australian Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (AUSTAT). Her Profile can be found Here. She is also a member of the Australian Society for Performing Arts Healthcare. An educational process, Alexander technique empowers the student to understand and coordinate their whole body to reduce tension. Meredith encountered Alexander Technique as a performer and was so impressed by the way it helped her with guitar-related injuries that she undertook formal training in the Alexander Technique in 2017.</image:title>

Alexander Technique can expand our awareness of our whole selves, and when that awareness of the “use of the self” is present, it can be applied to every form of physical task, from washing the dishes to ballet.</image:title>

      <image:title>Suzuki Guitar Lessons</image:title>
      <image:caption>Suzuki Guitar Instruction Suzuki Talent Education is focused on young children, allowing them to reach their full potential by starting at an early age. Meredith accepts guitar students from age 3 and up, in two Melbourne locations: Carlton North and Elsternwick. The benefits of the Suzuki Philosophy Dr Suzuki began his method of musical training to allow teaching of an instrument the same way that a child learns language – as a part of everyday routine, through repetition and familiarity. The Suzuki method uses many types of games as a part of the instruction because these methods work to motivate children and create an environment in which children are eager to learn. Suzuki talent education has wide reaching effects on the future of your child, from accelerating and increasing brain potential, to developing character and increased focus. The parent is very involved in the process in the younger years, acting as a “home teacher”, and is encouraged to learn a little of the instrument in the beginning phases of learning posture and position.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Suzuki Guitar Lessons</image:title>
      <image:caption>Lesson Structure The recommended lesson routine for Suzuki guitar is one private lesson per week and additional group classes. Group classes are an excellent way to introduce many concepts such as fearless performance, socialization, musicianship and elements of musicality such as dynamics or tempo. Suzuki guitar instruction gives students an excellent start, as beginning in early childhood allows the child to develop an ease and a technical proficiency that will help them no matter which musical path they may choose later on in life. The right sized instrument: Finding an appropriate sized instrument for little ones can be challenging – there are a limited number of instruments available for rental through my studio. Alternatively, if thinking of purchasing an instrument, parents are encouraged to check in with me before doing so.
